A historically black university, Delaware State University was first established in 1891. Located in Dover, Delaware, Delaware State University was originally known as the Delaware College for Colored Students. Created by the Delaware General Assembly, the Delaware College for Colored Students was soon renamed to the State College for Colored Students in 1893. The State of Delaware wanted to ensure that there was no confusion between this institution and Delaware College. In 1944, the State College for Colored Students received its first official accreditation as a college. Three years after this change in accreditation status, the State College for Colored Students was renamed to Delaware State College. In 1993, Delaware State College was renamed one final time to Delaware State University to better reflect the different types of academic programs being offered at the school. Since its humble beginnings, Delaware State University has grown to become one of the most prominent universities in the state of Delaware. Located in Newark, Delaware, the University of Delaware is a public research university. Established in 1743, the University of Delaware’s motto is “Knowledge is the light of the mind”. Originally opened by Francis Allison, a Presbyterian minister, the University of Delaware was originally known as the Free School. Initially located in New London, Pennsylvania, the school was eventually renamed to the Academy of Newark. At this time in history, Delaware was still part of Pennsylvania and therefore the Academy of Newark was denied a charter as to not cause competition between it and the already established University of Pennsylvania. After Delaware and Pennsylvania were established as individual states, the Academy of Newark was reestablished as Newark College and was eventually renamed to Delaware College in 1843. Reopening as a land-grant school in 1870, Delaware College was finally renamed to its current name in 1945 and became coeducational that same year after merging with the nearby Women’s College of Delaware. Since that time, the University of Delaware has grown to become the largest university in all of Delaware. The school has also been recognized by Carnegie Classifications due to the high level of research undertaken by the University.
