Online education is rapidly rising in popularity as a way for individuals to advance their skills and credentials and move up in particular career paths. The flexibility of online education allows students to maintain more rigorous work schedules while being able to fulfill the requirements of their education.

The first question that many prospective students ask when pursuing online degree programs, is “how much will this education cost me?” Indeed, the cost of any educational program is an important factor to consider when determining whether or not further education will pay off in the long run. We have thus compiled this ranking of the 50 most affordable public and private nonprofit colleges and universities offering online programs of study as a resource to help prospective online students find high quality online degree programs at among the lowest tuition rates available.

From a list of nearly 200 colleges and universities, which Nonprofit Colleges Online has identified as offering online degree programs at affordable tuition rates, this ranking was narrowed to the 50 most affordable institutions overall by per-credit tuition rates. To be included in the ranking, colleges must be regionally accredited, and not-for-profit institutions offering undergraduate and graduate level online degree programs in at least 10 disciplines. Tuition rates however were the sole criteria for compiling this ranking. Ranking the Cheapest Online College Programs

#1. Western Governors University

Located in Salt Lake City, Utah, Western Governors University, or WGU,was originally founded by 19 U.S. state governors in 1997. WGU is the first online university to be accredited by NCATE (for teacher preparation), and received $10M in funding from the U.S. Dept. of Education for a Teachers College. WGU is an online university offering bachelor’s and master’s degrees focusing on career oriented education in teaching, nursing, IT, and business, designed to allow working professionals the opportunity to fit a university education into their busy lives. Students at WGU work entirely online with mentors, except with a few exceptions for teaching and nursing programs.
