50 Best Nonprofit Colleges and Universities for Online Doctorates

Our 50 Best Colleges for Online Doctorate Degrees 2018 ranking highlights the best non-profit, regionally accredited colleges and universities at which to pursue an online PhD or other doctoral degree online. Students seeking doctoral level degrees typically go on to work in highly competitive positions as college and university faculty, or as leaders in nonprofit, government, or private sector organizations.

Especially when pursuing faculty positions, having a degree from a reputable institution is important. Thus, we have built this ranking primarily through aggregating scores from U.S. News & World Report and other national publications that measure reputation. We primarily look at schools global and national reputations as well as the particular graduate college in question’s national reputation and reputation of the college’s online programs. We have also weighted tuition into this ranking, though because at the doctoral level, the reputation of the degree conferring institution is so important, tuition has been weighted lightly compared to the other factors in this ranking. Tuition was weighted at 5%, online program reputation 10%, global reputation at 19%, college reputation at 29%, and the university’s national reputation at 38%.

Of the schools that were put through this methodology, the top 50 scoring institutions are featured. As always, only regionally accredited nonprofit or public schools were eligible for this ranking.
