Our Students Before Profits Award was created to promote nonprofit colleges and universities offering online degree programs that put students before profits and education before the bottom line.

For our Best Online Accounting Degree award winners, we selected online programs from accredited, nonprofit colleges and universities with objectively lower than average tuition cost and have ranked the programs according to their affordability.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, when business majors graduate and enter the working world they are offered above-average salaries, substantial benefits, and an opportunity to be successful in a career with a significant upward trajectory.

The Bachelor of Accounting Online is a versatile degree which imparts the necessary skills and knowledge to not only fill finance and accounting related positions (which are many and varied) but also to transition to other areas of business.  The CEOs and CFOs of many companies began their careers as accountants.

Florida Atalntic University is a public university located in Boca Ranton, Florida and with five campuses across the state.  The school is part of the Flordia State University System.  FAU was founded in 1964 as a graduate level college and expanded to offers programs for undergraduate students in 1984.  The university currently enrolls over 30,800 students and is classified by the Carnegie Foundation as an institution with high research activity.

Established as a Teachers’ College by the Louisiana State Legislature for the preparation of teachers in 1884, NSUL is a public university that has been dedicated to teaching and learning for over a hundred years.  Northwestern State enrolls over 9,200 students. The NSUL campus is also home to the Louisiana School for Math, Science, and the Arts, a state sponsored boarding school for high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors.  U.S. News ranks NSUL #92 in Best Regional Universities (South) and #47 in Top Public Schools.

Western Governors University is a private nonprofit, online university established in 1997.  The Universities goal is to “expand access to higher education through online, competency-based degree programs,” and does so by students working in coordination with faculty mentors online and through frequent phone communication, taking tests online which are proctored via webcam and other online proctoring technologies.  The university enrolls over 46,300 students.

Bachelor of Accounting Online

The online Bachelor of Science in Accounting degree program offered by WGU through its College of Business is a unique program that does not use a credit-based course system, but rather determines a students competency and knowledge through challenging assessments in particular subject areas.  Students are expected to pass at least 12 competency units (CUs) per six-month term, but the number of CUs that can be completed per term is unlimited.

Located in Dickinson, North Dakota, DSU is a public university and part of the North Dakota University System.  DSU was founded in 1918 as Dickinson State College and for the preparation of teachers in rural North Dakota.  It gained university status in 1987.  Dickinson currently enrolls over 2,500 students and offers bachelor’s degrees in more than 75 fields of study.

Established in 1911 in Flint Township, Michigan, Baker College is Michigan’s largest private, not-for-profit university with 13 locations statewide and an online campus. The college is a four-year vocational school that aims to impart job-specific training to its students while emphasizing broad academic development.

#8. Athens State University

Athens State University is a two-year university for students for upper-level college students.  Founded in 1882 as Athens Female Academy, the Methodist Church later took control of the school changing it to Athens Female Institute.  The state of Alabama took control of the college in 1974 after it had become a coeducational institution and in 1998 it was granted university status.  ASU offers thirty major programs of study and enrolls just over 3,500 students.

The Bachelor of Science in Accounting offered through Athens State University prepares its studets for a wide variety of professional accounting careers as well as future graduate study. SPSU is a public university established in 1948 in Marietta, Georgia.  SPSU was recently approved to be consolidated with Kennesaw State University and is currently under transformation to make that consolidation happen.  The school enrolls over 6,200 students and has a strong professional education focus offering many majors and degrees in Management, Engineering, Architecture, Computer Science, and more.

Southern Polytechnic University offers a Bachelor in Accounting  egree programs in which the majority of coursework can be taken online.  However, some on-campus study may be required for the completion of the degree.  The program is designed to give students a broad understanding in the major components of the accounting industry and the foundation requirements to register for the certified public accounting certification as directed by the Georgia State Board of Accountancy. Included in the 120 hours required to earn this degree, is comprehensive coverage of business principles.

#10. Columbia College

Columbia College of Missouri is a private, nonsectarian liberal arts school located in Columbia, Missouri. Founded as Christian Female College in 1851, it was the first female college west of the Mississippi River to be chartered by a state legislature. Colorado State University’s global campus, known as CSU-Global, is a non-profit, online, public university. The  program is designed around study of legal compliance and ethics, finance, marketing, leadership, economics, and decision making. Washington State University, founded in 1890 five months after Washington’s statehood, is located on 620 acres in the Palouse region of the nation in Pullman, Washington. The school is the nation’s largest, and first, land-grant university. The main campus of WSU enrolls approximately 28,000 students, and the online campus an additional 26,000.

New England College is a private college in Henniker, New Hampshire with a campus occupying about 26 acres of land.
