The Students Before Profits Awards were created to recognize nonprofit colleges and universities offering degrees that put students before profits and education before the bottom-line.  For our ranking of the 2017 Online Master’s in Organizational Leadership winners, we chose online Organizational Leadership degree programs from nonprofit colleges and universities, accredited by independent and trusted accreditation boards, with lower than average tuition costs, and have ranked them by affordability.

Those interested in pursuing graduate degrees have a greater deal of options and flexibility available to them then ever before.  Often times, when deciding to pursue a graduate degree a major component of the decision is cost and whether or not the student will have time to participate in the plan of study.  Online Master’s programs have become increasingly popular among students looking to continue beyond their undergraduate education.  Todays students, if they were not already holding down a job during their undergraduate, are more than likely working a job to pay off college loans or are already working in their field of choice and are looking to gain more education to advance their career. Built on the site of a former frontier military outpost, Fort Hays State University opened in 1902.  Adding an existing branch to the already formed Kansas State Normal School, the Western Branch of Kansas State Normal School was founded on the grounds of the abandoned Fort Hays site.  It didn’t take very long of the school to outgrow its footprint at Fort Hays, causing the the university to build a new campus closer to the town of Hays.  Located closer to Hays, Fort Hays State University still maintains part of its original Fort Hays campus.  Now, Fort Hays State University has grown to become the third-largest public university in the state of Kansas.  The school is currently home to 11,200 students and offers sixty different majors for students to enroll in.  Half of Fort Hays State University students study online.  Fort Hays State University is a public institution.

#2. University of Alabama

The University of Alabama began accepting students in 1820 making it the oldest public university in the entire state of Alabama.  Located in the original state capital of Tuscaloosa, the University of the State of Alabama in Tuscaloosa was established by the General Assembly of Alabama after the state’s admittance into the Union.  Built with a library at the center of the campus, the University of Alabama borrowed design influences from Thomas Jefferson’s design for the University of Virginia.  Now, the University of Alabama has grown immensely to comprise a system of universities of which the University of Alabama sits at the center of.  Known for its research programs, the University of Alabama is home to 37,000 students across its Tuscaloosa campus.  The University of Alabama is  a public institution.

#3. Marshall University

At the center of the Marshall University is the Old Main, an original building found on the campus’ land dating back to when the land still belonged to Virginia and the building was home to the Mount Hebron Church.  Originally founded as the Marshall academy, the school was named after John Marshall by his good friend John Laidley.  John Marshall was the fourth person to serve as Chief Justice of the United States.  Established but the Virginia General Assembly, the Marshall Academy opened in 1838 and was later renamed to Marshall College in 1958.  The school temporarily closed during the Civil War.  Now, Marshall University is located in West Virginia in the town of Huntington. The school is home to nearly 14,000 students.  Marshall University is a public institution.

#4. Cameron University

A year after being granted statehood, the state of Oklahoma got to work creating an infrastructure for educational.  By 1908, six different agricultural schools were established through the state – one in each judicial district.  One of these six schools was the Cameron State School of Agriculture.  The city of Lawton was selected after the state had heard the school had set aside nearly 220 acres for the new school just outside of town.  Soon after, construction on the school was completed and students began attending class in 1909.  Named after Rev E. D. Cameron, the first State Superintendent of Schools in Oklahoma, the school was later renamed to Cameron State Agricultural College to reflect the school’s expanded curriculum.  In 1941, the school joined the Oklahoma State Systems of Higher Education.  Now, the school enrolls approximately 5,600 students and offers over fifty different programs.  Cameron University is a public institution.

#5. Western Governors University

At a meeting of the Western Governors Association in 1996, the then governor of Utah, Mike Leavitt, proposed that a school be founded that leveraged competency-based learning models that would provide students primarily with distance-based education programs in order to reach the most students.  This new school would eventually become Western Governors University.  With its primary focus on online education, Western Governors University was able to keep the pricing of is programs down while reaching a larger base of students in order to provide as many students with the tools needed to start a new career.  Originally opened in Salt Lake City, Utah, Western Governors University expanded into more states across the west including Washington, Indiana, Missouri, Texas, Nevada, and Tennessee.  Now, the school is home to almost 77,000 students.  Western Governors University is a private institution.

Western Governors University offers students a Master of Science Management and Leadership degree.  Designed for experienced working professionals, this program will provide students with the skills needed to continue climbing the ranks within an organization.  Students will focus on case studies to allow them to see the way leadership and management skills can be applied in the real world.  This program is made available entirely online and does not require students to visit any of the Western Governors University’s campuses.  A minimum of 34 credits are required to complete this degree.

#6. Southwestern College – Kansas

The Southwest Kansas Conference College was established on a small plot of land designated by the state of Kansas in the year 1884 and would eventually grow to become Southwestern College – Kansas.  Laying dormant for nearly a year, the school remained in limbo as the state struggled with issues relating to the funding and size of the school.  Finally, after resolving the issues that held up development, construction began on the Southwestern Kansas Conference College.  Students began attending the school in 1886.  The school operated under the name of Southwestern Kansas Conference College for almost twenty years after which the name was shorted to Southwestern College in 1909.  Now, the school focuses on providing students with the most technology-forward experience possible by providing all students with a laptop issued by the college.  The school currently offers 1,900 students at their Winfield, Kansas campus.  Southwestern College – Kansas is a private institution.

#7. Black Hills State University

After combining two earlier schools: Dakota College and Dakota Academy, the Dakota Territorial Legislature began developing the Dakota Territorial Normal School from the components of the two other schools in 1883.  Over the course of the few years, the school stutter-stepped into existence until 1885.  At this point the school’s development had stabilized and students were regularly enrolled in courses at the school.  By 1923, the school was authorized to offer Bachelor’s degrees and became a full-fledged four-year college.  The school remained under the Dakota College name until 1989 when the school was renamed to its current name of Black Hills State University.  Located in Spearfish, South Dakota, Black Hills State University is home to almost 4,800 students.  Black Hills State University is public institution.

#8. University of South Dakota

The University at Vermillion was established by the Dakota Territorial Legislature in 1826 and would eventually develop into the University of South Dakota.  Predating the Dakota territories inclusion into the United States, the University of South Dakota’s far-reaching roots make it one of the oldest educations institution in both South and North Dakota.  It is also the oldest university in the stat of South Dakota.  Located in Vermillion, a small South Dakota town, the University of South Dakota now sits at the center of the community.  The University of South Dakota is home to the only medical and law schools in the state, as well as home to the home of the only accredited business school.  Approximately 10,000 students are enrolled in one of the school’s nearly 270 different degree programs.  The University of South Dakota is a public institution.

The Lynchburg Baptist College was established by Jerry Falwell, the Senior Pastor of Thomas Road Baptist Church in 1971 creating the foundation for which Liberty University would be built upon.  Founded in the town of Lynchburg, Virginia, the Lynchburg Baptist College was developed to provide a Christian-based option of higher-learning for students in the area.  After four years, the school was renamed to the Liberty Baptist College in 1976.  After receiving university-status after almost a decade, the school was renamed to its current name of Liberty University in 1985.  The school continues to celebrate its deep Christian heritage but is also welcoming to all students of all background.  Currently 15,000 students attend class at the Lynchburg campus while an additional 100,000 students are enrolled online.  Liberty University is a private institution.

#10. Concordia University – Saint Paul

The Missouri Synod, one of the biggest Lutheran church bodies in the entirety of the United States, help to found Concordia University – Saint Paul in 1893.  Created to provide students with a higher-education that would prepare them to enter into the church ministry, the Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod established the school.  The first students enrolled in classes in 1893, and the Concordia University – Saint Paul began educating students and preparing them for the ministry. The school quickly began to grow beyond its original scope.  In 1921, the Concordia University – Saint Paul gained two-year college accreditation and then later received four-year university accreditation in 1962.  Originally only accepting male students, the school went on to accepting females in 1950.  Located in Saint Paul, Minnesota, Concordia University – Saint Paul enrolls over 2,800 students.  Concordia University – Saint Paul is a private institution.

#11. Pfeiffer University

Miss Emily Prudden began offering students home-schooling in the late 19th century.  From these humble beginnings, Pfeiffer University would eventually spring forth.  Accepting students in 1898, the school was originally called Oberlin after eventually being renamed to Mitchell School after Mrs. mary P. Mitchell for her endowment.  Originally located in Hudson, North Carolina, the school moved to Lenoir, North Carolina after a fire destroyed the original campus.  After this fire, the Pfeiffer family provided the school with funds to aid in rebuilding efforts resulting in the school being renamed to Pfeiffer Junior College in 1934.  Eventually the school would gain college-status and then university-status which was then reflected in the school’s name change to Pfeiffer University.  Located currently in Misenheimer, North Carolina, Pfeiffer University enrolls 1,200 students.  Pfeiffer University is a private institution.

The Sister of Loretto founded Loretto College as a Catholic women’s college in the year 1915.  Upon its founding, Loretto College was the first of its kind west of the Mississippi River.  Eventually, Loretto College would develop into what is currently known as Webster University.  Admitting only men until 1962, the school operated under the Sisters of Loretto from 1915 to 1967.  It was in 1967 that the school’s management and ownership was transferred from the Sisters of Loretto a board of laypeople, another first for the school’s within the United States.  Located in the city of Webster Groves, Missouri for which the school receives its name, Webster University enrolls almost 1,700 students.  The school offers a very robust online education program that has contributed to the school’s stunning number of 170,000 graduates.  Webster University is a private institution.

Upon opening its doors, National University has focused heavily on providing a greater flexibility to its students.  From its inception, National University has created programs for working professionals that are adaptable and flexibly by offering programs at night, on the weekends, and eventually online.  Founded by Former Lieutenant Commander of the United States, David Chigos, National University was founded to serve working professionals in 1972.  Originally located in San Diego, California, the school later was relocated to La Jolla, California.  Still operating its main campus out of La Jolla, National University has added additional campuses in Virginia, Nevada, Georgia, and Florida.  National University is the twelfth-largest non-profit university in the United States and the second-largest in the state of California.  National University is a private institution.

#14. Belhaven University

Doctor Lewis Fizhugh chartered Belhaven College in 1894 out of a small residence on Boyd Street in the town of Jackson, Mississippi.  The initial home for the school only lasted a year after which a fire razed the building.  The school was promptly reopened after just one short year of construction.  In 1904, the original benefactor of the school, Doctor Fitzhugh passed away, and ownership of the school was given to Doctor J. R. Person who operated the school for another five years until the new building was claimed by another fire.  After this second fire, control of the school was transferred to the Presbyterian Church and was reopened in 1911.  Initially an all-female college the school began to enroll men.  In 2009, the school was renamed to Belhaven University.  Still located in Jackson, the school now enrolls 4,300 students.  Belhaven University is a private institution.

#15. Colorado State University

Edward M. McCook, the governor of the Colorado Territory, established the Colorado State University in 1870 with the stroke of a pen.  Exclusively existing on parchment signed by the governor, the school slowly began to coalesce over the coming year.  The first major development came when a parcel of land was purchased by Robert Dazell, which lead to the commencement of construction of the thirty-acre campus in the town of Fort Collins.  Known as the Colorado Agricultural College, the school was added to the Colorado State University system in 1876 after the state had received statehood.  Finally, in 1879 the school began to accept students.  Operating under its original name for half a century, the school was renamed to Colorado State College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts to reflect the schools now expanded curriculum.  The school received university-status in 1957 and was renamed to Colorado State University.  The school now enrolls over 34,000 students.  Colorado State University is a public institution.

#16. Azusa Pacific University

The Training School for Christian Workers was established by a Methodist evangelist and a group of Quakers in the town of Whittier, California in the year 1899.  This school would, over time, become Azusa Pacific University.  The Training School for Christian Workers was the first of its kind: the first Bible College on the West Coast.  Operating out of the church, the school eventually outgrew the confines of the church and established a campus after consolidating with other nearby Evangelistic schools.  The school was renamed to the Pacific Bible College in 1939 after gaining the ability to grant four-year degrees.  Through a series of mergers and consolidations, the school eventually was named the Azusa Pacific University in order to reflect the different universities that comprised the newly founded organization.  Azusa Pacific University is now located in Azusa, California, and enrolls almost 11,000 students.  Azusa Pacific University is a private institution.

Established as the Denver Bible Institute in 1914, this school would eventually go on to become the Colorado Christian University.  Originally operating independently of the state of Colorado, the school was granted a college charter and was renamed from the Denver Bible Institute to the Denver Bible College to coincide with its new degree-granting abilities.  Operating as the Denver Bible College for over three decades, the school eventually merged with the nearby Western Bible Institute resulting in a new name of Rockmont College.  This name was rather short-lived as the school was quickly renamed.  Finally, the school underwent one final merger in 1989 and was renamed to its current name, Colorado Christian University.  Home to over 7,400 students, Colorado Christian University operates out of its Lakewood, Colorado campus.  Colorado Christian University is a private institution.

#18. University of Wisconsin-Platteville

In 1959, the Wisconsin Institute of Technology and Wisconsin State College merged and was named the University of Wisoncin-Platteville.  With its earliest origins dating back to 1866, the oldest part of the University of Wisconsin-Platteville was known as Platteville Normal School and was a preparation school for teachers.  It was later renamed to Platteville State Teachers College, and then Wisconsin Institute of Technology, Platteville.  In 1907, the Wisconsin Mining Trade School was formed and would eventually become the Wisconsin Institute of Technology.  In 1966, after the two schools had merged, the school was granted university-status and the name was changed after the University of Wisconsin merged with the Wisconsin State University system.  Located in Platteville, Wisconsin, the University of Wisconsin-Platteville enrolls just under 9,000 students.  The University of Wisconsin-Platteville is a public institution.

In Glasgow, Kentucky, in 1876, A. W. Mell founded the Glasgow Normal School and Business College.  This school would eventually develop into Western Kentucky University.  Following the establishment of the Glasgow Normal School and Business College, the Potter College was established by Pleasant J. In the 1950s, it became clear to South Carolinians that their needed to be an additional college added to the Lowcountry area of South Carolina.  Members of the South Carolina Baptists began to draw up plans to establish a new school, one that would combine higher-education with Baptist teachings.  After drawing up plans and providing the South Carolina Baptist Convention with a proposal, money was raised to create the new university.  By 1965, the school was established as the Baptist College at Charleston and students were enrolled in classes.  Over the years, the campus continued to grow and grow until the school received university-status in 1990 and was subsequently renamed to Charleston Southern University.  The school now is home to over 18,000 students and offers 48 different undergraduate programs as well as eight graduate programs. Founded in Houston, Texas, the South Texas Bible Institute was established in the autumn of 1953 and would eventually become the Mid-America Christian University.  Founded by Dr. Max. R. In 1877, a group of Italian Jesuits fled to Las Vegas, New Mexico in seek of asylum.  When they arrived in the city they began to establish the Las Vegas College.  After operating the school for a few years, the Bishop of Denver asked the group to move to Denver to open another school.  Operating the two different schools, the Jesuits decided to streamline operations by combining the Las Vegas College with the newly formed Sacred Heart College into what they decided to call the College of the Sacred Heart.  Later in 1921, it was determined that they’d change the name of the school to honor Saint John Francis Regis.  Thus the school was renamed to Regis University.  Students are asked to complete works of community service while attending the school to keep with the Jesuit traditions.  Currently, Regis University enrolls 8,700 students and offers a large array of programs.  Regis University is a private institution.

The school now known as Brenau University was opened in 1878 as a women’s seminary.  The school began to more closely resemble the school as it is today after the school was purchased by H. J. Bishop Bernard J. School, in conjunction with the Archdiocese of Chicago, founded Lewis University as the Holy Name Technical School in 1932.  During the construction of the school, the name was changed to Lewis Holy Name Technical School to honor philanthropist Frank J. Lewis who had donated most of the money used to build the campus.  Upon its completion, the school began teaching classes while focusing heavily on aviation courses.  Lewis University was so intertwined with aviation studies that, during World War II, all classes were suspended so the US Air Force could use the facilities to teach and train pilots. Thomas May Peirce opened the Peirce College as the Union Business College as the Civil War came to a close.  Hoping to prepare students for what he believed would be an incoming economic boom following the end of the civil war, Thomas May Peirce wanted to make sure that their would be place for returning soldiers to come to learn skills and information that would allow them to be successful in the new economy.  The Union Business College opened its doors to men and women in 1865, making it one of the country’s earliest coeducational schools.  The school’s name was later changed from Union Business College to the Peirce School of Business Administration in 1917.  Later, it became Peirce Junior College to coincide with the school being allowed to grant associate degrees.  Now known as Peirce College, the school is located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and is home to approximately 1,900 students.  Peirce College is a private institution.

An Abraham Lincoln appointee, John Evans – the governor of the Colorado Territory, sought out to found the Colorado Seminary to help “civilize” the newly founded city of Denver.  At the time, Denver was just a small mining camp and John Evans hoped to increase the city’s potential by creating a climate of learning and education.  After some initial growing pains, the Colorado Seminary began to gain it’s footing and was renamed in 1880 to the University of Denver.  Dating all the way back to 1864, the University of Denver is the oldest private university located in the Rocky Mountain region. Samuel W. Tator and Phillip Group founded Quinnipiac University in the year 1929.  As the Great Depression began, Northeastern University, the only school in the New Haven, Connecticut area at the time, decided to close the local branch of the school as a cost-cutting measure.  Not wanting the town to lack an institution of higher learning, Samuel W. It was well known that George Washington had ambitions of opening a university and that he wanted it to be located in the capital of the United States.  George Washington had petitioned Congress many times throughout his career and even left this wish in his last will and testament.  After his death, Baptist minister Luther Rice began raising founding in order to open a school in his honor.  This school would eventually become George Washington University.  Located on College Hill in Philadelphia, the Columbian College in the District of Columbia was founded.  After negotiating with the George Washington Memorial Association, the school was renamed to George Washington University in 1904. Benjamin Titus Roberts opened Roberts Wesleyan University in 1866 as the Chili Seminary.  At the time, Benjamin Titus Roberts was at the forefront of social activism and staunchly opposed slavery and the treatment of the poor.  He hoped that by starting a seminary that he’d be able to influence the thinking of young people and train the next generation of leaders in the fight for civil rights and freedom.  After two decades operating as the Chili Seminary, the name was changed to Chesbrough Seminary after A. Calvin Leonard Johnson, Joseph B. Hoping to open in 1855, Middle Tennessee State University was delayed due to the outbreak of the Civil War.  After the war, plans for Middle Tennessee State University went unnoticed for decades.  Finally after decades, the General Education Bill of Tennessee revisited the plans for the school and what would eventually become Middle Tennessee State University began to coalesce.  Opened in 1911, Middle Tennessee State Normal School opened its doors.  Operating as just a normal school for its first fourteen years, Middle Tennessee State Normal School gear offering Bachelor degrees in 1925.
