Best Online Master’s in Nutrition: Students Before Profits Award

The Students Before Profits Awards were created to recognize nonprofit colleges and universities offering degrees that put students before profits and education before the bottom-line.  For our ranking of the 2017 Online Master’s in Nutrition winners, we chose online Nutrition degree programs from nonprofit colleges and universities, accredited by independent and trusted accreditation boards, with lower than average tuition costs, and have ranked them by affordability.

Students considering which degree program is best for their pursuit of a higher education should consider the option of pursuing an online degree program.  Online degree programs tend to have many benefits over their on-campus counterparts.  By cutting out all of the overhead that comes with offering a degree program on-campus, colleges are able to offer their online degree programs at a much cheaper price than their on-campus counterparts.  Typically, colleges will either use the same curriculum as they do on-campus, or they will adapt it slightly for use online.  This means students are able to get the same quality of education for a fraction of the price.  Online degree programs have the added benefit of allowing for a much larger degree of freedom over scheduling.  Many students have obligations other than their education.  Whether they are working a job or an internship, many students prefer the flexibility afforded by online degree programs.  Students can create their own schedules that best fit their needs at a fraction of the price.

A Master’s in Nutrition degree is a great way for students to gain the necessary and knowledge to further their careers as a nutritionist or a dietitian.  Students in this program will continue to build upon the knowledge they learned in their undergraduate studies.  They will further examine the way that nutrients in food interact within the human body to promote health.  Students will take courses in organic chemistry, food science, dietetics, and much more.  They will learn to examine and understand diets and eating habits, in order to help people lead healthier lifestyles.  A Master’s in Nutrition is not integral for working within the field of nutrition, however it will greatly increase your value to an organization resulting in higher pay.

#1. University of Alabama

After Alabama was admitted into the Union, the General Assembly of Alabama established the University of Alabama.  Accepting its first class of students in 1820, the University of Alabama is the oldest public university in the state of Alabama.  The original capital of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, is the site of the University of Alabama.  The campus at the University of Alabama is heavily influenced by the design for the University of Virginia, a design created by Thomas Jefferson.  Now, after many years of growth and change, the University of Alabama now sits at the center of the University of Alabama system of higher education as the flagship university. Now, the school is home to a student body of approximately 37,000 students and is well known for its research programs.  The University of Alabama is a public institution.

#2. University of North Dakota

Six years prior to North Dakota became a state, the University of North Dakota was founded.  Established in 1883, native of Grand Forks, North Dakota, George H. Walsh, drafted and submitted a bill to the North Dakota Legislature that called for the establishment of the new school within the city of Grand Forks.  Construction on the school began immediately after the signing of this document and the first round of classes were held in 1884.  The first building to be completed on campus was the Old Main, which is still part of the campus to this day.  The University of North Dakota brought great prosperity to the city of Grand Forks, North Dakota.  As the University of North Dakota campus grew and expanded, so did the the city of Grand Forks, North Dakota.  Today, the University of North Dakota is home to a student body of almost 15,000 students.  University of North Dakota is a public institution.

Students at the University of North Dakota are able to enroll in the the Master of Science in Nutritional Education and Counseling degree.  Through this course of study students will learn how to assess the nutrition education needs of various populations and risk groups.  They will also learn how to develop and implement behavior theory in order to help influence various groups to change their diet and habits.  This program is available entirely online and does not require any visits to the University of North Dakota to complete their studies. #3. Mississippi State University

Originally named the Agricultural and Mechanical College of the State of Mississippi, Mississippi State University was commonly referred to as Mississippi A&M in its early years.  One of the earliest schools in the state to receive funding though the Morill Act, Mississippi State University’s original mission was to teach students “agriculture, horticulture, and the mechanical arts…without excluding other scientific and classical studies, including military tactics.” The school’s name was later simplified to Mississippi State College in 1932.  Over the years, Mississippi State University has grown to become the largest public university in the state.  Located in Starkville, Mississippi, Mississippi State University enrolls almost 3,400 students.  Mississippi State University is a public institution.

#4. South Dakota State University

Founded in the Dakota Territory, prior South Dakota gained statehood, the Dakota Agricultural College was established.  The Dakota Agriculture College would eventually change to become South Dakota State University.  Founded in 1881, the first buildings on the campus were completed in 1883 at which point the first classes were held.  Six years later, South Dakota became a state.  South Dakota State University operated under the name of Dakota Agriculture College for the following two decades.  In 1904, the school was renamed to the South Dakota State College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts.  This name change was to reflect the school’s increased curriculum.  The name remained the same for the following sixty years until the school was finally renamed to South Dakota State University in 1962. Currently, over 12,500 students are enrolled at South Dakota State University.  South Dakota State University is a public institution.

#5. Central Michigan University

The forerunner to Central Michigan University, the Central Michigan Normal School and Business Institute opened its doors to students in the year 1892.  At first, the Central Michigan Normal School and Business Institute only offered classes in teaching, business, and stenography.  The school’s initial focus was to provide a place for teacher’s to be trained more effectively in teaching as, prior to this, the state did not offer any sort of formalized training programs for teachers.  But from these humble beginnings the school grew.  By the end of the 19th century, the Michigan State Board of Education took control of the school and renamed it to the Central Michigan Normal School.  Later, in 1959, the school’s name was changed to Central Michigan University.  Located in Mount Pleasant, Michigan, Central Michigan University boasts a student body of 22,000 students.  Central Michigan University is a public institution.

#6. University of Kansas

Thomas Carney, then Governor of Kansas, signed legislation creating a state university located in Lawrence, Kansas.  This school was created on the condition that the city of Lawrence would match funding from the state government to help fund the construction and operation of the university.  Lawrence obliged and money was raised for the university while former Kansas Governor Charles L. Robinson offered up land within the city to the state to be used for the new school.  By 1865, the Board of Regents officially established what would eventually become the University of Kansas.  The school began accepting its first class of students one year later in 1866.  Now, still located in Lawrence, Kansas, the University of Kansas is the flagship university of the state and has a student body of over 28,000 students.  The University of Kansas is a public institution.

#7. Iowa State University

The Iowa General Assembly established Iowa Agricultural College win 1856, laying the foundation for what would eventually evolve into Iowa State University.  One of the first schools in the entire nation to accept federal grant money through the Morill Act of 1862, Iowa State University accepted its first class of students in 1868.  Iowa State University was also a coeducational school from the beginning, making it one of the oldest coeducational public universities in the United States.  Originally, Iowa State University’s curriculum focused mainly on agriculture, but eventually expanded to contain a wide variety of different topics.  Iowa State University even went on to open one of the first veterinary school’s in the nation.  Known by most as Iowa State, the school underwent a few name changes during its history.  Renamed Iowa State College of Agricultural and Mechanic Arts in 1898, the school’s name was simplified to Iowa State University of Science and Technology in 1959.  Located in Ames, Iowa, Iowa State University enrolls over 37,000 students.  Iowa State University is a public institution.

#8. Kansas State University

Originally named the Kansas State Agricultural College, Kansas State University opened its doors to students in 1862.  As the oldest public institution of higher education in the state of Kansas, Kansas State University is also one of the first recipients of funding through the Morill Land Grant Act.  After its establishment, the earlier, more focused curriculum of the school began to expand to cover more areas of study over the coming years.  Due to this change in breadth of material, the school was renamed to Kansas State University.  The school was built in Manhattan, Kansas and has remained there the entire life of the university.  Currently, Kansas State University is home to over 24,000s students and offers 120 different programs of study.  Kansas State University is a public institution.

The Sisters of Mercy founded the University of Saint Joseph in 1932.  The school was founded on a rich history of Catholic tradition that the University of Saint Joseph continues to honor to this day.  The University of Saint Joseph was originally established a women’s school for liberal arts.  The school continues to its history as a women’s college at the undergraduate level but also has a graduate program that is coeducational.  The University of Saint Joseph is widely known for its social work as it has been recognized numerous times by the Connecticut Chapter National Association of Social Workers.  Located in West Hartford, Connecticut, the University of Saint Joseph is home to a student body of over 1,100 students and offers over twenty-six different courses of study.

#10. University of Nebraska-Lincoln

Most commonly referred to as “Nebraska”, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln is located in the city of Lincoln, Nebraska for which the school gets its name.  Nearly simultaneous with Nebraska receiving statehood, the Nebraska State Legislature authored and passed legislation that called for the creation of a state school known as the University of Nebraska in 1869.  After sourcing funding and land grants for the new school, construction began on what would become the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.  After four years of development and construction, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln began accepting its first class of students.  The school grew very quickly.  By the turn of the 20th Century, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln had become the the fifteenth largest school in the nation. Now, the flagship of the University of Nebraska system, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln has a student body of over 25,000 students.  University of Nebraska-Lincoln is a public institution.

#11. East Carolina University

Recognized by the Association of Public and Land Grant Universities as an “Innovation and Economic Prosperity” campus, East Carolina University is one of North Carolina’s major research universities. Originally, East Carolina University was chartered as East Carolina Teachers Training school by the state in March 1907 and began accepting its first class of students two years later in the year 1909.  Just a short decade later, the school was granted the ability, by the state, to grant degrees and was renamed East Carolina Teachers College.  Over the coming decades the school would change and evolve to become East Carolina University.  By 1967, the name of the school was changed to East Carolina University and it was added to the University of North Carolina system in 1972.  With a student body of over over 28,000 students, East Carolina University’s campus is located in Greenville, North Carolina.  East Carolina University is a public institution.

Senior Pastor of Thomas Road Baptist Church, Jerry Falwell, established Lynchburg Baptist College in 1971 as Liberty University.  Over the next half-century, the school would change to become the Liberty University of today.  The school’s original goal was to provide an opportunity for higher learning through a Christian perspective.  Lynchburg Baptist College was established in the city of Lynchburg, Virginia.  Four years later, the school was renamed to Lynchburg Baptist College in the year 1976.  Later in 1985, the school was granted university status by the state and was renamed to Liberty University.  Now, Liberty University has a student body of 15,000 students on campus and enrolls over 100,000 students online.  Liberty University is a private institution.

#13. University of New England

The largest private university in the state of Maine, the University of New England is also one of the state’s largest educators of healthcare professionals.  The origins of the University of New England date back to 1831 when it was originally known as Westbrook Seminary.  During this time, the school was an all-boys school, but this would eventually change when the school began accepting both sexes in the year 1967.  Initially located just in Biddeford, the University of New England quickly required additional space and opened two additional campuses; a campus in Portland and an international campus in Tangier, Morocco.  The school offers over seventy different degree programs currently.  University of New England is a private institution.

#14. University of Massachusetts Amherst

As a beneficiary of the Morill Land Act, the University of Massachusetts Amherst opened in 1863 as the Massachusetts Agricultural College.  The school grew over the passing decades, and in 1931 the name of the school was changed from Massachusetts Agricultural College to Massachusetts State College.  At the end of World War II, the University of Massachusetts Amherst experienced a major influx of applicants which created a period of massive growth for the school.  The name of the school was changed to the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 1947.  By the 2000s, the UMass system of school was implemented and the University of Massachusetts became the flagship.  Currently, the University of Massachusetts Amherst offers two-hundred different programs and enrolls 30,000 students.  University of Massachusetts Amherst is a public institution.

Known for its prolific research output, the University of Memphis is also home to the Center for Earthquake Research and Information (CERI) – one of the world’s most preeminent homes of earthquake research.  Commonly known as and referred to as “The U of M”, the University of Memphis was established in 1912.  Along with three other state universities, the University of Memphis was established through the passing of the General Education Bill by the Tennessee State Legislature.  Originally, the school was named the Western Tennessee Normal School, however this name did not last and the school underwent several name changes.  The University of Memphis name was finally reached in 1994.  With a student body of 22,000 students, the University of Memphis is located in Memphis, Tennessee.  University of Memphis is a public institution.

#16. Northeastern University

The precursor to Northeastern University, the Evening Institute for Younger Men opened in 1868.  From its inception, Northeastern University has always had a deep commitment to offering flexible alternatives to students when it comes to higher education.  Originally, Northeastern University offered as a night school allowing those who couldn’t attend school during the day an opportunity to continue their education.  Northeastern University continues to this day to offer flexible education option.  Founded in Boston, Massachusetts, Northeastern University also has campuses in Charlotte, North Carolina; Seattle, Washington; and Silicon Valley, California.  Carnegie Classifications Institution of Higher Education has also classified Northeastern University as having high research activity, placing the school among the upper-echelon of research universities.  Over 25,000 students are currently enrolled at Northeastern University and are able to enroll in 190 different graduate and undergraduate programs.  Northeastern University is a private institution.

#17. University of Bridgeport

Founded as the Junior College of Connecticut, the University of Bridgeport was founded in 1927.  It was one of the first junior colleges in the northeastern United States.  By 1947, the governor of Connecticut had chartered the school to begin offering four-year bachelor’s degrees resulting in the school being renamed to the University of Bridgeport.  In 1979, the school began offering doctorate degrees to its students.  The University of Bridgeport is well-known for its beautiful seaside campus, much of which was donated by P.T. Barnum of Barnum & Bailey’s Circus.  The school is also well-supported by the Professors World Peace Academy, a nonprofit dedicated to seeking world peace through education.  Located in Bridgeport, Connecticut, the University of Bridgeport has a student body of over 5,000 students.  University of Bridgeport is a public institution.

Founded in 1849, the Michigan State Normal School enrolled its first class of students in 1853.  Eventually, the school was renamed to Eastern Michigan University, but before that the school acted as a training school for teachers throughout the state.  By 1899, the curriculum at the school expanded and the name of the school was changed to Michigan State Normal College.  Sixty ears later, the school had received university status from the state and was named its current name, Eastern Michigan University.  Still located on the grounds of its original campus, Eastern Michigan University is located in Ypsilanti, Michigan.  Thirty-five minutes out of Detroit, the Ypsilanti campus at Eastern Michigan University has a student body of approximately 24,000 students.  Students are able to choose from over 170 different programs of study.  Eastern Michigan University is a public institution.

The Normal School in Lexington opened its doors to its first class of students in 1839.  Established by Horace Mann, the secretary of the Board of Education in Massachusetts created the school as one of the first normal schools within the United States.  Cyrus Peirce was appointed by Horace Mann to be the principal of the school.  In 1843, the school moved to West Newton due to growth concerns and later was moved to its current location in Framingham in 1853.  The school began offering its first bachelor’s degrees in 1922.  Framingham State University had many names over the course of its history, eleven named in total, and it wasn’t until 2010 that the school was renamed to Framingham State University.  Located in the Bare Hill area of Framingham, Massachusetts, Framingham State University has almost 6,500 students.  Framingham State University is a public institution.

Program Overview

Students at Framingham State University are able to enroll in a Master of Education Concentration in Nutrition Education degree.  Through this program of study, students will prepare for a career as a health educator, nutrition professional, nutritional director, or more.  Students will learn how to develop nutrition education curriculum, and how to interpret nutrition research.  This program is available entirely online and does not require any visits to the Framingham State University campus. A minimum of 30 credits are required to complete this degree.

The North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanics was established by the General Assembly of North Carolina in 1887.  This school would eventually become North Carolina State University.  In the beginning, the school only enrolled males and taught just agriculture, military tactics, and mechanical arts.  To ensure that students also received a well-rounded education, classical studies were also integrated into the curriculum.  After thirty years, the name of the school was changed to the North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering to account for its widening curriculum.  By this time, students began referring to the school as NC State.  In 1962, the school was brought into the University of North Carolina system.  With 34,000 students, North Carolina State University is located in Raleigh, North Carolina.  North Carolina State University is a public institution.

The Master of Science in Nutrition degree is offered to students at North Carolina State University.
