Our Students Before Profits Award was created to promote nonprofit colleges and universities offering online degree programs that put students before profits and education before the bottom line.

For our 2014/2015 Online Bachelor’s in Psychology award winners, we selected online programs from accredited, nonprofit colleges and universities with objectively lower than average tuition cost and have ranked the programs according to their affordability.

Affordability, accreditation and nonprofit status are our primary criteria when it comes to ranking these programs, but many of these programs are consistently ranked among the top by other national publications and we believe they deserve to be considered among the best online bachelor’s in psychology programs available.

Note that tuition rates listed below are based on costs for out-of-state, full-time students. In-state rates are often less expensive, and part-time cost per credit hour is often more expensive. 

 

#1. Northwestern State University of Louisiana

Northwestern State University of Louisiana was established in 1884 as the Louisiana State Normal School and was the first school in Louisiana to offer programs in nursing and business education. NSU is now a four-year public university primarily located in Natchitoches, Louisiana and offers 34 accredited online degrees.

NSU’s B.S. in Psychology was the first bachelor’s degree in psychology in the state to be offered online. This flexible degree will enable students to gain insight into complex ethical issues and become sensitive to the diversity among individuals. With a solid foundation in behavioral science, graduates will be prepared to work in entry-level positions in the field and to study psychology at the graduate level. Candidates also have the option of obtaining a Certificate of Completion in substance abuse or prevention counseling.

#2.Fort Hays State University

Fort Hays State University is a public institution located in Hays, Kansas. The university consists of approximately 11,000 students, over half of which are online. Founded in 1902 and originally located on the grounds of a retired military outpost, Fort Hays State University moved to its current location in 1904. Big Creek, a stream that spans the main 200 acre campus, adds to the beauty of the school and also serves as an occasional outdoor laboratory for students studying the biological sciences.

Fort Hays State University offers both an online B.A. and B.S. in Psychology. The department’s curriculum is aligned with the American Psychological Association’s standards for undergraduate students. Though the core coursework is the same for both programs, a candidate for the B.A. program must complete 20 hours of out-of-department courses as determined by Psychology faculty, as well as 10 hours of a foreign language. A candidate for the B.S. in Psychology must complete 20 hours of coursework in Natural Sciences and/or Mathematics. The B.S. program is recommended for those intending to study psychology at the doctoral level.

#3.Columbia College

Columbia College of Missouri is a private, nonsectarian liberal arts school located in Columbia, Missouri. Founded as Christian Female College in 1851, it was the first female college west of the Mississippi River to be chartered by a state legislature. The school changed its name to Columbia College of Missouri in 1970 after becoming fully co-educational. In 2009, Columbia College was recognized for its high standard of academic excellence and positive student feedback by being named a “Best Midwestern College” by the Princeton Review.

Columbia College of Missouri offers an online B.A. of psychology. Courses are structured in eight-week sessions and are offered at rolling dates several times throughout the year. Old Dominion University is located in Norfolk, Virginia. Established in 1930 as the College of William and Mary, the school acquired university status and its current name in 1969. ODU enrolls approximately 24,000 through on-campus and online programs, and is recognized as a national leader in distance learning.

Namesake of Blessed Anne-Marie Rivier, founder of the Sisters of the Presentation of Mary, the school was founded in 1933 as a women’s institution and was originally situated in Hudson, New Hampshire. Rivier University began admitting male students in 1991, and moved to its current location in 2012. The online campus maintains the same standard of quality in curriculum and faculty as their traditional campus, and offers courses in accelerated 8-week sessions.

 Founded in 1933 as the New Hampshire School of Accounting and Secretarial Service, Southern New Hampshire University is a private, nonprofit university located between Manchester and Hookset, New Hampshire. The state granted the college its charter in 1963, and the first baccalaureate degrees were awarded in 1966. Its online campus boasts over 200 regionally accredited undergraduate and graduate degree and certificate programs, and also has specialized accreditation for some of its degrees and programs.

UIU’s distance education program includes an online campus, 15 centers in the U.S., and centers in Hong Kong, Singapore, and Malaysia.

The psychology major at Upper Iowa University consists of 36 in-department credits, with at least 18 of those in upper division courses. It is now a private, nonprofit inter-denominational Christian university, and has been been recognized as a distinguished regional school. The University of the Southwest’s online campus offers about 15 undergraduate and graduate degrees, and its main campus is located in Hobbs, New Mexico.

Pennsylvania State University World Campus is often referred to as “Penn State Online” and is the virtual campus of Pennsylvania State University. The World Campus was founded in 1998, but Pennsylvania State University has been offering distance education courses since 1892, when it developed one of the nation’s pioneer correspondence study programs for statewide farmers.

The university is an affiliate of the ten-member Concordia University System.

Concordia University-Saint Paul offers an accelerated online B.A. in Psychology. The program begins three times per year – fall, spring, and summer.
