#2. Southern New Hampshire University
Husband and wife, Harry A.B. Shapiro and Gertrude Crockett Shapiro had ambitions of opening a school in New Hampshire that would provide adults with a means to gain a higher-education. In what was the Colorado Territory at the time, Edward M. McCook, the then governor of the territory, signed into existence the creation of Colorado State University in 1870. Established to provide students vocational preparation, Fisher College was founded in 1903 by it’s co-founders Myron C. Fisher and Edmund H. Fisher. In a small house on Boyd Street in the town of Jackson, Mississippi, Doctor Lewis Fizhugh chartered Belhaven College in 1894. Established in 1916, Avila University is located in Kansas City, Missouri. Opened under the original name of College of Saint Teresa, Avila University was founded by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. In 1895, Marietta Walker donated twenty acres of land to help the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints establish a school known as Graceland College. Named by Col. Founded nearly a century-and-a-half ago, Midway University is the only all-female day college in the state of Kentucky. Established in 1849 as the Kentucky Female Orphan School, the school officially began accepting students in 1849. #18. Limestone College
Father and son, Thomas and William Curtis opened Limestone College in 1845. After immigrating from England, the two scholars wanted to establish a school that would provide women with the opportunity to gain a higher education. After settling in South Carolina, they began work on the school and eventually opened the state’s first women’s college, Limestone College. #19. University of Minnesota
Beginning at the turn of the 19th century as a series of experimental research farms funded by the Minnesota legislature, the groundwork for what would eventually become the University of Minnesota Crookston was formed. Reverend C.M. Damon, a Free Methodist preacher, opened Orleans Seminary in the plains of Nebraska with his wife in 1884.
